I think this is well put. It seems to me that the extreme ends to many issues are the most visible..you see the legalistic fundy's or the liberal sides. I think most of us tend to see the extremes easier than the more balanced positions. I know that I am just as guilty as anyone. I think your "hybrid" position isn't simply a "best of all world's" solution. I think it encompasses the heart of Scripture. Christ genuinely met the needs of people. He also called them unto repentance.

Since this is such a great subject, I wonder how you practically encourage your people in this hybrid thinking. Much evangelism in the church feels like being a salesman. And often people are made to feel as if they should always force the issue no matter the situation...and then feel guilty if "they" haven't converted someone. (I will confess though that apathy is just as much an issue in our churches as well concerning evangelism) Anyway...would love to hear some more thoughts on this.

I am presently reading a book titled 'Jesus and the Disinherited' by Howard Thurman.

Thurman was born at the beginning of last century, nurtured by a maternal grandmother who had come through slavery. I'd like to share some of his writing:

It is not a singular thing to hear a sermon that defines what should be the attitude of the Christian toward people who are less fortunate than himself. Again and again our missionary appeal is on the basis of the Christian responsibility to the needy, the ignorant, and the so-called backward peoples of the earth. There is a certain grandeur and nobility in administering to another's need out of one's fullness and plenty. One could be selfish, using his possessions-material or spiritual-for strictly private or personal ends...It is the sin of pride and arrogance that has tended to vitiate the missionary impluse and make of it an instrument of self-righteousness on the one hand and racial superiority on the other.

This is one reason why, again and again, there is no basic relationship between the simple practice of brotherhood in the commonplace relations of life and the ethical pretensions of our faith. It has long been a matter of serious moments that for decades we have studied the various peoples of the world and those who live as our neighbors as objects of missionary endeavor and enterprise without being at all willing to treat them either as brothers or as human beings. I say this without rancor, because it is not an issue in which vicious human beings are involved. But it is one of the subtle perils of a religion which calls attention to the point of overemphasis, sometimes to ones obligation to administer to human need".

Thurman summarized the essential of Jesus...in these words "You must abandon your fear of each other and fear only God".

"I do agree with JD's statement.. We don't serve to convert, we serve because we are converted".

We have wrestled with what you have put into words. I think your hybrid concept is great. Balancing "serving with no strings attached" so that people don't feel that they are a project while at the same time being aware of opportunities to "give a reason for the hope that is within you" is really the balance we need. Thanks for thinking this through. Dar Wolber
